Ceanothus are generally appreciated for their evergreen foliage and also dramatic display of blooms, usually in shades of blue. There are many cloned varieties or selections from species of ceanothus available. This offering is from seed collected in the wild, and will exhibit some genetic variation of color, from pale to darker blue. West Coast native plant.

Ceanothus thyrsiflorus Family: Rhamnaceae Common name: Blueblossom

Size: 10 to 20’ tall, can vary widely Shape: upright, more so in partial shade

Growth rate: fast Type: evergreen Foliage: Deep glossy green, to 1 1/2” long, 3 prominant veins underside

Flowers: Blue, thumb sized clusters of tiny flowers cover the bush. (Variable color ) Blooms for a month. Fragrant.

Features: Glossy dark green leaves all year. Beautiful, abundant blue flowers in spring.

Growing conditions: Sun (or some shade ), drought tolerant. Prefers drainage, tolerates clay. Do not water regularly in the summer after the first year, will shorten it’s life Likes alkaline soil. Easy to grow.

Uses and comments: All ceanothus fix nitrogen. Good in background of a hedge, and as a shorter lived, fast growing nitrogen fixer in plantings of longer lived trees. Excellent use by bees and butterflies, and other pollinators enjoy the flowers.
