This is our native red flowering currant bush, blooming for quite a pleasant time, telling us that indeed spring is slowly unfolding. Deer will eat young plants, but fortunately they will get above deer height, and grow fairly rapidly.

Foliage: Green leaves are 5 lobed, finely hairy on the underside. The foliage is pungent when rubbed

Seasonal foliage: Some yellow and orange.

Flowers: Early spring. 10 - 20 flowers in drooping clusters. Flower color varies from white, pale pink, to rose pink or deep red.

Features: Cheery blossoms in early spring, attracts hummingbirds. Fruits are blue-black, and not so tasty.

Growing conditions: Drought tolerant. Mostly found in open woods. Sun to part shade. Prefers good drainage.

Climate zone: 6-10

Uses and comments: An attractive, drought tolerant plant, which beautifully heralds spring unfolding. Delicious flower color. Provides nectar and pollen for early emerging pollenaators who have little else to eat. Good for erosion control.
