An Arbutus native from SW Ireland to the Mediterranean region. a broadleaf evergreen with simple leaves 2-4” long, glossy green on top, lighter under side. Clusters of white urn shaped flowers which hang downward appear early spring. Large fruits develop, 3/4” across, round turning yellow, orange, then red - a good show! Bees like the flowers. Prefers full sun, well drained acid to neutral soil. Drought tolerant, no summer water needed once established. 10 - 15’ tall and more eventually. Can be allowed to be a shrub or trained to a small tree. Hardy to zone 7, around 10 F. Family: Ericaceae
