A NW native shrub or small tree, to 30’. This plant is deciduous, with simple ovate dark green leaves. The flowers are inconspicuous. The berries are red to purple, and attractive to wildlife. An adaptable plant, best in partial shade, prefers organic soil with some moisture but also adaptable to dry conditions and more sun. The bark has traditionally been used as a laxative. Attractive in all seasons.
