This is a West Coast native, exceptionally well suited as a landscape plant. A broadleaf evergreen with tough leathery leaves and a strong presence year round. It will get 12+ feet tall in a broad irregular rounded form, and grows quickly with a bit of water. Plants are dioecious - either male or female. Males have long white catkins in late winter, females develop elongated dangling purple seed clusters.
Sun or part shade, good drainage, poor soil OK. Zone 8, hardy to 10 or so. Avoid exposure to arctic wind.
