The berries are an important food in it’s native habitat. It thrives in hot, dry locations with poor soil. It is a small tree, 12’ or so, up to 40 in good soil. Narrowly to broadly columnar in shape, with blue green to grey green foliage. Prefers full sun and excellent drainage. Juniper is dioecious - separate male and female plants. Hardy to zone 3.
